At En in Ageba-cho, Shinjuku, guests can enjoy a Japanese menu showcasing pristine ingredients—from dashi-steamed chawanmushi and conger eel shabu-shabu to wagyu nigiri—complemented by warm hospitality from the chef and proprietress.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
A warm glow marks En, a Japanese restaurant located on the 1th floor of a building in Ageba-cho, Shinjuku, serving course menus that highlight carefully sourced seasonal ingredients. The meal begins with dishes like an umami-rich chawanmushi infused with shijimi clam broth alongside seasonal sashimi, progressing through thick slices of conger eel in hot shabu-shabu, fragrant grilled turban shell, and finally seared wagyu nigiri sushi. Condiments and sauces are house-made, yielding gentle, memorable finishes across appetizers, simmered preparations, and sweets like raw wheat-gluten nama-fu dumplings.
Much of the restaurant's welcoming ease comes from the husband-and-wife team at the counter: the chef leading the kitchen and the proprietress attending attentively to the room. Exchanging pleasant conversation about origins and cooking methods, they observe the pace of eating and portion preferences to time each plate seamlessly, letting diners relax fully into their meal. They are also open to adjusting courses to reduce meat or working within specific dinner budgets, offering the flexible care typical of an independent kappo establishment.
The beverage selection is equally considered to complement the food, featuring sake from around Japan—including selections paired with salt-grilled blackthroat seaperch—along with wine. In addition to lively counter seating where guests can converse with the hosts, private rooms provide a tranquil setting for dining, with advance reservations recommended for evening kaiseki banquets.
